1. Formative history
IFRAD formerly known as Northern Mountainous Forestry Research Centre (NORFOR) under University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) - Thai Nguyen University (TNU), Thai Nguyen was established under Decision No. 678 / QD-TCCB dated 15/8/2008 of Thai Nguyen University's Director.
In the process of formation and development since 2008, the Institute has built a system synchronization facilities which include the research facilities of seed production, experimental stations, tissue culture room, control room testing and seed preservation; staffs and experts have diverse scientific levels in many fields such as forestry, plantation, biotechnology, forest resource management, remote sensing of forest planning, rural development, community forestry, and landscape gardening. The scientific research, technology transfer, services and technical advice have evolved in many areas, which have been studied, tested and successfully propagated in many forest trees and medicinal plants with high economic value by biotechnology; transfer of science and technology and provide technical advisory services for various programs and projects in our country, especially in the area of Midlands Province - Northern Mountain. In some areas such as the development of livelihood model for residents, plant breeding with high quality, intensive afforestation, management of natural resources, development of the pharmaceutical, planning and land allocation, ecotourism, environment, ...along with the growth, the Center has been recognized and appreciated by TUAF and TNU , for its testament to the growth, hence, the Decision No. 87/QD - TNU date 16/1/2015 of TNU's Director about the establishment IFRAD was issued on the basis of transformation and upgrading of NORFOR.
2. Mission
To provide training in conducting research and transferring intensive science and technology for staff with postgraduate qualifications in the field of forestry, natural resource management and environment of TNU for socio-economic development of the midlands and northern mountainous province and all country.

4. Scope of Work
5. Facilities
6. Scientific research and technology transfer
6.1. The results of scientific research
- Breeding and improved crop varieties
+ Forestry:
The Institute focuses and concentrates in breeding of forest tree seedlings, which focuses on fast-growing tree species for plantation of timber supply raw materials such as Acacia, Eucalyptus, Manglietia glauca Bl ( M. conifera Dandy ),Melia azedarach Linn ...
Breeding method has successfully bred varieties Acacia BV10, BV16, BV32, Eucalyptus U6, U7 by the method of tissue culture, it has supplied cell andpropagated coefficient and high quality seeds.
To improve productivity and quality of planted forests, the Institute has developed and completed the intensive planting process of Acacia, Eucalyptus, Melia azedarach Linn. for the northern mountainous provinces.
The Institute has bred and supplied native forest trees effectively in the marketfocusing on crops witheconomic and ecological values such as: ErythrophleumfordiiOliver,Micheliamediocris Dandy (Talaumagioi A. Chev), Dalbergia Tonkinensis Prain, Melia azedarach Linn, Toona sinensis A.Juss M.Roem (Pygeum arboreum Endl. et Kurz) …
Besides, the forest trees and other forest products are also the focus of research by the Institute, and it has selected breeding and provided seed crops to the market including Canarium album (Lour.) Raeusch, Canariumtramdenum Dai &Ykovl.,CalaumstetradactylusHance, ...Forestry specialty crops are selected grafting material from the top row of seedlings, for yield and quality stability which are favored by the market.
+ Medicinal plants:
+ Fruit trees:
IFRAD has collaborated with the Institute of fruit trees in researching, selecting and launching successful transplant of fruit trees with high economic value such as Artocarpusheterophyllus, Psidiumguajava, Manilkarazapota,... which are supplied to the market. Fruit trees of the institute have a clear origin, quality assurance that many organizations and individuals have known and trusted.
To improve the genetic quality of crops, the Institute has built a brand and address which has been provided to Thai Nguyen province in particular and the northern mountainous province in general, within the framework of project Investment and Development of forest seeds in Thai Nguyen province, in the period of 2010-2015. The Institute has been conducting to build management systems for synchronous forestry seeds which include management systems in tissue culture room; Seed testing laboratories; system of nurseries, and seed forests. During the initial stages of 2014, the Institute has built successfully 3.5 ha of Melia azedarach L. forest seeds; 5.2ha of Acacia mangiumWilld; 1.2 ha of Zone assayingand 3.0 ha conservation park for 9 species (Acacia, Eucalyptusalba, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Canarium album (Lour.) Raeusch, Canariumtramdenum Dai &Ykovl.,Dendrocalamusgiganteus Munro, Morinda offcinalis How, Amomum Villosum) on land that has been allocated by the management of TUAF. In the future, this will be the supply of raw materials with high quality seeds for the provinces in the northern mountainous province in general and Thai Nguyen inparticular.
- Research Trials about Forest Tree:
To help in choosing the varieties of high quality, consistent with the ecological conditions of the region, over 7 years of operation, IFRAD has conducted a number of studies and trials that has achieved important results:
- Conducting to study the effects of cuttings method for Amomum Villosumwith different formulations of the nursery phase. On that basis, selected Amomum Villosumvarieties with cuttings method for highest efficiency.
- The Institute in cooperation with the Institute of Vietnam Forestry Science has conducted trials of 15 varieties of transplant Macadamia which are derived from the best varieties of Australia and Vietnam. Initially, the plants grow well, in accordance with the ecological conditions of Thai Nguyen province. On that basis, will choose the best origin to plant.
- Currently, the Institute hastested65 kinds of Acacia, and Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus was found to be cold tolerantin the northern mountainous provinces.
6.2. Science and Technology Transfer
The Institute has made the transfer of science and technology for a variety of typical programs and projects, as follows:
- Science and Technology Transfer Project for Applied Sciences and Technology in intensive planting Acacia supply wood raw material for Tuyen Quang.
- Science and Technology Transfer Project Application of Science and Technology Development in breeding and developing Morinda offcinalis How at Phu Luong district, Thai Nguyen province.
