Seminar on Environmental Issues Awareness

A seminar held in TUAF on Dec. 2, 2013 by Dr. Fraser Shilling of University of California Davis Department of Environmental Science and Policy

“The goal of the project is to identify areas that are still suffering the effects of Agent Orange / Dioxin and rebuild deteriorated lands that were sprayed in order to increase agro-ecosystem productivity, improve rural community well-being, self sufficiency, and reduce proximal health risks ,” stated by Dr. Fraser when he started the seminar.
He acknowledged all the efforts given by the University Rector, ITC, Advanced Education Program for being such an excellent host when he visited, had fun and taught General Ecology subject to K42 students here in the university.

And also to Hanoi National University where they are developing a collaboration for the succesful implementation of the project mentioned above. Dr. Fraser Shilling shared to everybody that He is working on a lot researches about Transportation Ecology, Sustainability Indicators, Water Quality Supply in California, Climate Change provided that storms are already intensifying and Different projects on Forest Ecosystem in order that if people planned to develop a certain area they  should not harm or destroy the others, it should be balanced.

He explained that one of the impacts of climate change is the increase of sea level where the ocean rises. Earth gets warm, so the ocean follows, ice has been melting therefore making the ocean higher. In case of California, they have calculated that areas will be flooded wherein thousands of people and buildings will be damaged. Some proposed alternative activities are Rubber and Rattan plantation that will surely benefit the economy.

The problem has to identify and restore degraded forests especially the ones were sprayed  since bombing, forest fires and logging caused the high percentage of loss forest. The project steps include Short and Long Term approach which administers and raising awareness of local communities that may have been affected, develop a master plan to proritize actions and to integrate restoration with local economic improvement. Establish models of sustainable rural production  to benefit communities and natural system.

AEP gets more concious regarding these very essential matters. Because of this short seminar, students will be familiarized of every human’s responsibility to stop making environmental problems turn into  worse and introduce adjustments to such impacts that we are currently experiencing. Protecting the Earth is saving the future
