Institute of Life Science

1. History

The Institute of Life Science is a research institution of Thai Nguyen University. The institute was established under the decision No 852/QĐ - TCCB on September 30, 2008, which was earlier named as a Laboratory Centre of Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry.Currently, the Institute of Life Science is managed byThai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry for comprehensive operation and supervision.

The institute of life science is currently one of the prestigious centers in term of scientific research and technology transfer. It has so far received theCertificate of Merit awarded by Ministry of Education & Training, Certificate of Merit awarded by Thai Nguyen Provincial People’s Committee…….

2. Mission and Function

Mission:

The main function of Institute of Life Science is to conductscientific research (basic and applied), train undergraduates and postgraduates, and to conduct technology transfer of specific fields for economic and social development of the northern midland and the mountainous regions in particular and the nation in general.

Functions:

(1). Scientific research:

The research activities are: (1) breeding of plants and animals in accordance with conditions of the northern mountainous areas, early diagnosis of diseases in humans, plants and animals, preservation and processing of agricultural products, applying biotechnology in human health protection; (2) application of active biological natural compounds in  protecting human health, food technology and improving  the quality of animal and plant life; (3) conserving biodiversity, conserving and developing indigenous genetic sources; and (4)  environmental improvement and protection .

(2)Technology transfer to production:

Consulting, investing and transferring scientific results for the northern mountainous provinces, Designing  agricultural models to develop the social economic of the region; Setting up models of biodiversity conservation with the participation of the community,  models of production combining environmental protection, public health models... 

(3) Training:

-  Guiding students to practice professional skills with focus on the fields of specialization of Thai Nguyen University.

-   Guiding postgraduate students and PhD students in conducting  research at the institute to become highly qualified staff.

-   Training laboratory technicians for local units.    

(4). Scientific and technological services:

Carry out activities to support production of the units and the local community, including: Analysis of chemical compositions of agricultural products; production and supply of high quality seeds and seedlings, pure drinking water and other science and technology products.

3. Organizational Structure

The Institute of Life Science has 2 offices (General Office and Office of Science and Academic Affairs) and 5 departments (Department of Biochemistry, Department of Cell technology, Department of Molecular Biology and Gene technology, Department of Microbial technology and Ecological environment). The institute also has a testing laboratory accredited by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for testing and assessing the quality of agricultural products and animal feeds. At present, the institute is setting up a laboratory for chemical analysis which gains the VILAS/IOS 17025:2005 standards. It is equipped with modern equipment, facilities and scientific research in the northern midland and mountainous regions.  

 The institute has 30 staffs with 01 Professor, 03 Associate Professors, 02 Doctors, and 11 Masters.

4. Training Programs

- To guide students to practice professional skills with focus on the fields of specialization of Thai Nguyen University

- To guide students in their practice/internship before graduation in the research areas of institute

- To provide supervisionto graduate students to complete Master’s theses and doctoral dissertation.

- To provide training courses to staffs, faculties of Thai Nguyen University and others.

5. Scientific Research and Technology Transfer

For more than 08 years of growth and development, the institute has successfully conducted many scientific research projects at different levels and transferred technology to Northern midland and highland areas including 02 National Approved Projects, 08 Ministry Approved Projects, 09 Thai Nguyen University Approved Projects, 27 TUAF Approved Projects and 07 transfer programs in Thai Nguyen, Bac Kan, Ha Giang, TuyenQuang provinces in an effort to contribute to socio-economic development. Some of the important products of the institute are tissue culture plants (Musa paradisiaca L, Anoectochilus, Morinda officinalis stow……), biological products (Bio-Vet ferment, Bio-Tilis ferment…..), lingzhi……. , which contribute significantly in the improvement of the lives and the environment in Northern midland and highland provinces.
